Symptoms of Stress Incontinence

Stress incontinence occurs due to a weakening of the tissues and muscles that support the bladder. Many women experience stress incontinence after childbirth. These women notice urine leakage when they perform actions such as exercising, standing up, sneezing, coughing, or laughing.

How We Treat Stress Incontinence

Many women fear that they'll have to deal with stress incontinence for a lifetime. At Western Branch Center for Women near Portsmouth, VA, we offer help and hope.

When you arrive for your appointment, we may perform tests to determine your bladder function. Dr. Alnaif may recommend any of the following treatments:
  • Kegel exercises to strengthen your muscles
  • Dietary changes such as quitting drinking alcohol and caffeine and quitting smoking
  • Scheduling bathroom breaks

If the problem is more severe, Dr. Alnaif may recommend using a urinary device to prevent leakage. She may also recommend surgery that supports the muscle and tissue, such as:
  • Sling procedure. Your doctor creates a “sling” from tissue to support the urethra
  • Retropubic colposuspension. Your doctor uses incision or laparoscopy to lift and support the tissue
  • Injectable bulking agents. Your doctor injects bulking agents into the tissue

These treatments lessen the symptoms of stress incontinence.
